2 prong power strip

Perhaps the simplest thing to do is to pick up a few of what they call "cube connectors", they have 2 blades and a thin green wire on the male side and three openings on the opposite female side, 2 blades 1 prong. I believe they grounded the outlet boxes so you had to use one of those plug converters and attach the ground wire to the outlet screw. I see no real reason that if you do not overload a multi-receptacle outlet strip by demanding or requiring more current than the branch circuit can handle wherein you trip a breaker either in your main panel or on the outlet strip. They may have run a ground wire or new circuits to some of the outlets and added three prongs there. Some of the most important outlets that should be grounded are the refrigerator and the washing machine, since both have metal housings and can deliver a nasty shock possibly kill you under right conditions if something goes wrong. If you feel up to it, you might simply replace your old two prong receptacles with the current NEMA grounded 3 prong receptacle, although if you do decide to do that, be extra careful with straightening out the existing conductors wires if the wiring is the old creosote-fabric and paper wrapped type. You can buy a cheap outlet tester and check for grounded outlets yourself.

A quick check inside an electrical box should answer your questions- Pull a receptacle from the box- the down stairs should have 3 wires attached to it. white, black, and copper bare. Just about every outlet box was the old steel type that screwed together having several knockouts for running wires into the box but certainly not suitable for armored bx cable which might've been available then, but was not used by the builder who built the house just after the end of WW2. The outer shield of armored bx cable was the common grounding means if there are only 2 conductors wires within this flexible conduit. What I want to know is what can I do. A surge protector will only give you protection from any surges or spikes increased values in your line voltage, it does not depend upon a ground wire to interrupt or break the circuit.
